Why bone loss happens?

When a tooth is lost or extracted, the underlying jawbone no longer receives the natural stimulation it needs from chewing. Over time, this natural resorption process causes the bone to shrink and deteriorate, which can eventually lead to the shifting or loosening of adjacent teeth. Similarly, periodontal (gum) disease destroys the supporting structures of your teeth, including the surrounding bone.

What to expect from start to finish

Comprehensive Exam.

We assess your bone density with imaging and a full exam, and walk you through exactly what your jaw needs — and why.

The Procedure.

The area is fully numbed with local anesthetic. We make a small incision, gently access the bone, clean the site, and place the graft material — sometimes with a protective membrane over it to support healing. The gum is then repositioned and closed with stitches. Most patients are in and out within the hour.

Healing & Follow-Up.

Initial healing — tenderness, swelling, the surgical site settling down — takes about a week. Full integration of the graft into your own bone takes longer: typically three to nine months, sometimes up to a year for larger grafts. Our dentists will see you for follow-ups along the way to confirm it's healing exactly as it should, and let you know the moment you're ready for the next step.
